Wall Plates...

How to hang them, where to source them, and why I love them

Oh hi!
How are you? If my Instagram feed is anything to go by, everyone is either on holiday, or at Oasis. I’m on jealous on both counts.

So today I wanted to talk plates. Specifically plates on walls. I have a small pile of pretty plates that I have been meaning to hang in my kitchen for years now (no exaggeration). Three of them are from Sézane (if you didn’t know they have a home offering, you should definitely take a look - I have quite a few pieces from them, dotted around my home - including this lamp, which I adore). Their candles are gorgeous too (and make a great gift if you want a chic alternative to the trusty Diptiques. Anyway, I digress.

There are lots of different approaches to hanging and displaying plates on your walls (and your space may well dictate this to some extent). You can fill a large space with them, you can anchor them around something like a large mirror, you can just hang one (or possibly two together), or you can mix a plate/plates in with other pieces (framed pictures, little mirrors etc etc). I think the latter is my personal favourite. Although I do love a singular plate hung in a kitchen, low, just above the countertop. And again, re themes/styles, there are no rules. Either group together - flowers, fruit, tones, colours etc, or go for a more mixed approach. I think for plates, I would probably go for the latter again. I do love a mash-up - I just really like how it’s more unexpected to the eye somehow. But I must say, I think colour tones, particularly classic crockery blues (and whites) and greens (and whites), can look really beautiful (and so chic) grouped.

Another thing I love about sourcing and displaying plates is that you can pick a gorgeous one up pretty much anywhere. Markets, car boot sales, antique shops, charity shops… And because (generally) they’re pretty small (even a serving platter is still manageable), they are easy to transport and bring home, even from holidays. I have lost count of the times I have found the most beautiful pieces of furniture (for next to nothing!) on my travels, but been unable to get them home (without spending a small fortune anyway). Plates? Easy! Just carry them (well wrapped) in your hand luggage. Then you get the added pleasure of the visual reminder of where the plate/plates came from, and/or a gorgeous holiday memory triggered.

So here’s some inspiration (above) for displaying/hanging; and some of my favourites (below) around to buy right now (as always, for every budget size)…
